#YoungOnsetColorectalCancer Is On the Rise 

💩It is actually on the rise in individuals younger than 50 years—and the sharpest increase occurs in those aged between 20 and 29 years (J Natl Cancer Inst, 2017). 

💩As of May 2018, the American Cancer Society’s recommendation was people at average risk start screenings at age 45
💩 The American College of Gastroenterology had already said that African-Americans should start routine screening at 45 because they have higher odds of getting colorectal cancer than whites.
💩 Anyone with a first-degree (parent, sibling) relative diagnosed before age 60 is supposed to start getting tested either at age 40 or 10 years before the age of diagnosis of the youngest relative who had the disease
💩 Physician-related delays (e.g., missed symptoms, initial misdiagnosis) have been estimated to occur in 15-50% of young-onset colorectal cancer cases.

While being diagnosed with only at the tender age of 31 and battling the illness, Shannon selflessly took action and advocated for for people to become aware of the signs/symptoms of CRC and get screened but also make healthier lifestyle choices like reducing sugar consumption. She witnessed firsthand how colorectal cancer was and still is becoming increasingly common in young adults, even as the incidence among older people is declining.
They are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage and to have to see two or more doctors before being diagnosed.
